On 28 March 1944, Japanese convoy No. 4328 departs Saipan for Yokosuka. The convoy consists of transport IKUSIMA MARU and auxiliary transport (ex-aircraft transport) KEIYO MARU and is escorted by minesweeper W-20.
On 30 March 1944, about 350 miles NNW Saipan, at 0233, American submarine USS STINGRAY (Lt. Cdr. Sam C. Loomis Jr SS-186) detects the convoy. STINGRAY slips past the escort to gain attack position on two cargo ships and fires four torpedoes at the lead ship.
IKUSIMA MARU is hit by one torpedo amidships port side, flooding the engine room and holds No.2 and No.4. The transport goes dead in the water.
At 0313, USS STINGRAY fires four more torpedoes that quickly send IKUSHIMA MARU to the bottom with the loss of 11 of her crew and 15 soldiers. W-20 rescues survivors.
