Bulgaria, Kingdom. A Superb Order of St. Alexander, Grand Cross in Gold and Diamonds, c.1910
(Орден "Свети Александър"). Type II (1908 - 1946), a Grand Cross, or possibly Grand Master’s Collar or the Lesser Collar's Cross, in silver, Gold and Diamonds. Cross of multi-piece construction, it measures 54.45mm x 115.0mm including Imperial crown, and weighs 102.2 grams. Obverse of the crown being constructed in silver, while reverse is made of solid 14Kt Gold, in between resting enameled crown; the cross is constructed similarly, obverse in silver and reverse in solid Gold and enamels; obverse center is constructed of Gold and enamels.
The entire obverse section of the cross, crown and pendalia is encrusted with numerous rose cut genuine Diamonds, ranging in sizes up to approximately 0.50 carats, while the total weight of diamonds is approximately 10.0 carats. Diamonds are of good quality, displaying only small inclusions, and are of white/slightly off-white color. Reverse of the top of the crown is hallmarked with Imperial Austrian hallmark for 14 Kt. Gold, Vienna proof mark (A) and maker's mark "FR" (Rothe, Wien).
This most superbly manufactured cross displays only slight wear, no chipping to enamels, and comes with full length of period sash. Circa 1910 period manufacture, in and of highest rarity.
Footnote: Pieces of extraordinary quality as this cross of the Order of St. Alexander were as a rule reserved for the Heads of prominent Royal Houses, like Tsar Ferdinand I or Bulgaria.
Footnote: Up until around 1920's it was customary to set diamonds into silver, as the process of manufacturing "White" gold was not economically developed.
